Benedict XVI received today a progress report on the preparation of the continental mission in Latin America, called for by the bishops’ meeting that he inaugurated in Brazil a year ago.

The Pope began the 5th General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, held near the shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil in May 2007.

Today in the Vatican, he received Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno Assis of Aparecida and Auxiliary Bishop Víctor Sánchez Espinosa of Mexico City, the president and secretary-general of the Latin American bishops’ council, respectively.

Both prelates are in Rome for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. They are also presenting the continental mission, set for an official kick-off this Aug. 17 at the closing of the 3rd American Missionary Congress in Quito, Ecuador.

Wednesday, the two prelates visited the Pope’s secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. They presented him the global plan, the guiding document for the continental mission, and the commemorative video of the 5th general conference.

According to the bishops’ council, the prelates “reported on all of the progress made in projecting and organizing the continental mission, and above all, the enthusiasm with which the kick-off in Quito on Aug. 17 is awaited. They also shared general aspects about the current situation in Latin America.”

Cardinal Bertone, the council reported, “recalled aspects of the trip to Brazil during which he accompanied the Holy Father. He was hopeful about the efficacy of the continental mission for solidifying the faith renewal that the bishops of the continent encouraged in the conclusions of the Aparecida episcopal assembly.”   Courtesy Zenit.org
