May 4, 2008 |
Benedict XIV appointed Redemptorist Father Byran Bayda as the bishop of the eparchy of Saskatoon of the Ukrainians. Bishop-designate Bayda, 46, was the superior of the Redemptorist Fathers at Yorkton. He was born in Saskatoon in 1961 and ordained a priest in 1987. He succeeds Bishop Michael Wiwchar, 75, whose resignation was accepted by the Holy Father. Canon law in the Eastern Church requires prelates to submit their resignation at age 75.The eparchy of Saskatoon of the Ukrainians has some 8,400 Catholics, served by 11 priests, three permanent deacons and 27 religious. The Ukrainian Catholic Church is one of the Eastern Catholic Churches, a term used for those Catholic Churches with their origins in Eastern Europe, Asia or Africa, with their own distinctive liturgical and legal systems. The Redemptorists have been ministering to the Ukrainian Catholics in Canada since the early 1900s. The identification of Yorkton with the Eastern-rite Redemptorists was completed by the establishment in 1961 of the Yorkton Province, a distinct unit within the worldwide Redemptorist Congregation.
