Journey Back to God
March 15, 2007 |
I remember when many household rituals included Saturday afternoon or evening confessions. But in today’s fast paced world perhaps we are not all able to participate in this rite weekly. The Sacrament of Penance, through which the reconciling love of God is made available to His people. Through genuine contrition, confession, penance and absolution, the believer is led to true conversion - a change of heart. St. Augustine reminds us that the Church “possesses both water and tears: the water of baptism, the tears of penance.” During this season of Lent, let us all participate in the Sacrament of Penance. Together, let us direct our gaze at Christ crucified and approach God with genuine tears of penance, that we may be renewed and restored to grace.
PRAYER OF THE PENITENT
Remember, O Lord, thy bowels of compassion; and thy mercies that are from the beginning of the world. The sins of my youth and my ignorances do not remember. According to thy mercy remember thou me: for thy goodness’ sake, O Lord. (Psalm 24:6-7)
