Real Religion Can’t Justify Violence
February 19, 2007 |
Authentic religion must never be a pretext to fuel conflicts, hatred and violence, said the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.
Cardinal Renato Martino said this when addressing youth of Aloysius College in Malta, in the context of three days of study on the social doctrine of the Church, according to a communiqué from his dicastery.
Individuals and communities have the duty to express clearly their complete and radical rejection of all forms of violence, especially that fueled in God’s holy name, said the cardinal.
Humanity expects from believers gestures of peace and solidarity, and credible words of hope, he noted at the meeting on “Peace, Violence and Religions.”
The cardinal opened the study days on Friday, presenting Benedict XVI’s message for this year’s World Day of Peace, entitled “The Human Person, Heart of Peace.”
